Facebook: The New Morning Paper?

Facebook: The New Morning Paper?

Facebook NewsOne morning while I was participating in my morning ritual of perusing Facebook, the status of a friend of mine caught my attention. He said, “Logging into Facebook each day is like reading the morning paper.”

This comment got me thinking. Could Facebook really be the current version of reading the morning paper? Is print media really on the way out? And has the internet really almost totally replaced newspapers as a source of information and advertising?

Is Facebook a Good Source of News?

Maybe Facebook isn’t the most accurate source of information, or the most useful. I mean, do I REALLY need to know that your Aunt Martha is recovering nicely from back surgery? However, the point can be made that we are not approaching a period of time where the Internet is going to be the main source of information – we are THERE.

I am the newest member of the Verticalwerks team, and my most recent professional experience includes five years in the print media industry, specifically in newspapers. One of the reasons I was excited to pursue a working relationship with Verticalwerks was that I felt technologically stifled at the newspaper.

Do Newspapers Still Serve a Useful Purpose?

Don’t get me wrong – I do believe that newspapers still serve a purpose, and that they will continue to exist. However, their overall usefulness has changed in recent years. I feel like my technological vision was a little hazy at the paper.

Now that I’m on the Verticalwerks team, my eyes have been opened. Technological advancements that I thought were “on the horizon” or “going to be a force to be reckoned with” are actually upon us. Thinking otherwise will leave you behind the curve and possibly affect the viability of your business.

During my time at Verticalwerks, I’ve concluded that their business model is: be on the cutting edge of technology while treating every customer as if they are our only customer. Both of these objectives set Verticalwerks apart from other marketing consultants.

A Brave New Media World

Verticalwerks succeeds at being on the cutting edge of technology. For example, when I arrived, I wasn’t 100% sure what SEO meant. I’ll admit it. Hey, I worked at the newspaper, remember? I even asked the question, “Do our clients know what that is?” It’s a basic term meaning Search Engine Optimization and it’s something that all internet advertisers strive for. It’s what makes your business list first on Google, and really – isn’t that main goal?

Verticalwerks was patient with me in getting me past the basics. Now I am learning things like how many different elements Google uses in their algorithms, why it is that links and blog posts boost your SEO efforts, and why it is imperative that your business not only has a Facebook page, but regularly updates it as well.

Newspapers might always have a place in this world. But in terms of cutting edge technology, effective marketing, and being accessible to the younger demographic, internet marketing is the way to go. It’s here. It’s now.

If you want your business to thrive in this technological age, a partnership with Verticalwerks is the best choice.
